“I knew that at Pratt & Whitney I would find plenty of opportunities, but that if I wanted to move, I would have opportunities within the other business units as well.”

Finance & accounting: FAQ

How does the recruiting process work?

We recruit from a number of schools, including focus and non-focus schools (LINK) to attract the most talented individuals to UTC. Depending on the location of the internship, a management team will conduct on-campus or in-house interviews. Selections are made in the spring prior to the internship period and qualified individuals can expect to get a response by April.

What kind of work will I do as an intern?

Interns have the opportunity to work in one of four functional areas: Accounting, Finance, Financial Planning & Analysis, and Operational Finance. These areas are located across all of the UTC business units.

  • Sample Accounting assignments: General Accounting, Consolidations, Government Accounting, Tax Accounting, Collaboration Accounting, Labor and Overhead Accounting
  • Sample Finance assignments: Program Financial Control, Campaign Analysis, Internal Audit, Treasury, International Pricing
  • Financial Planning & Analysis assignments: Interns will provide analysis in support of planning, budget variance, forecasting, financial reporting, valuation and business analysis
  • Sample Financial Operations assignments: Module Center, Service Center, Engine Center, Manufacturing Plants, Operations Planning and Reporting

The biggest difference in the work between the business units comes in understanding the issues, products, services and processes that are specific to each industry. Interns are not just learning corporate finance principles, but they are also contributors fulfilling key job requirements, adding value and organizing special projects as business needs arise.

What kind of training is provided?

Due to the time frame of the internship (May or June through August) and no predecessor to provide training, it is up to the department to which you are assigned to provide the necessary training andguidance to complete your job requirements. Instructions will be given in group assignments and special projects that are assigned.

Are interns evaluated?

Yes, once at the end of their stay with UTC. Evaluations are completed by the direct functional manager and are conducted much like evaluations given other company employees. Many factors are evaluated, most important job performance.

How are interns regarded internally at UTC?

Interns are an intricate part of their department's workload and are valued contributors. Internships are great to establish a network within the company and interns are viewed as potential Financial Leadership Program candidates.
